A two-vehicle accident at Woodlawn in Cleveland County Tuesday afternoon resulted In the deaths of the drivers of both vehicles.
According to a preliminary report from the Arkansas Department of Public Safety, Michael A. Burkhart, 50, of Warren and James E. McCoy, 77, of Little Rock were pronounced dead at the scene by the Cleveland County Deputy Coroner.
The report said McCoy was northbound on U.S. Highway 63 in a 2006 BMW when Burkhart, who was driving a 1995 Chevrolet S-10 pickup drove over the centerline and into the path of the BMW, striking it head-on.
After impact, the truck came to a stop in the northbound lane of traffic and caught fire. The BMW came to rest on the northbound shoulder of the highway.
The accident was reported at 4:30 p.m. and the two deaths brought to 179 the number of people killed on the state’s highways so far this year.
