The national news media reported Wednesday that President Joe Biden was to meet with three of the largest goods carriers in the country to try and work out supply chain issues that resulted from the Coronavirus pandemic.

Biden was to meet with representatives of Walmart, FedEx, and UPS who are expected to ramp up their efforts to move goods more rapidly from ports on the west coast

According to published reports, the delays are driven in part by worker shortages and COVID outbreaks, doubling the time it takes some products to make their way from Asia to the United States.

One of the labor issues mentioned has been a shortage of truck drivers and, on Tuesday, Steven Bloomberg, president of Southeast Arkansas College talked about that shortage and a new program that kicked off at SEARK.

Bloomberg appeared on the Oldies 101.3 morning show and was asked how people could participate in the new program.

He said trucking companies are offering sign-on bonuses ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 with a starting pay of about $40,000 a year.
