A tow truck driver was struck and killed in the Desha County community of Mitchellville Thursday night.

According to multiple sources 30-year-old James Jones of Dumas was attempting to assist a stranded motorist on the southbound lane side of U.S. Highway 65 in the 8 p.m. hour when an approaching car failed to yield and move into the inside lane, striking Jones. Jones died at the scene.

The Desha County Sheriff’s Office released a social media post indicating they were working a fatal accident alongside the Arkansas State Police at 8:30 p.m.

Family members of Jones confirmed his death in a post on the Deltaplex News Facebook page Thursday night, and are asking all motorists to beware when approaching vehicles with flashing lights that are on the side of the road, and to move over while approaching the vehicle.

There is no word at this time regarding the driver of the vehicle that struck Jones, nor any information regarding any pending charges.
