In light of Black History Month, the Advancing Health Literacy Program (AHLP) of Pine Bluff is highlighting key health conditions that the Pine Bluff community face to bring awareness and promote prevention.

Deseray McKinzy, the Media Coordinator for AHLP joined the Oldies 1013 Morning Show Thursday with a guest, Michael Turley a dietitian from Jefferson Regional to discuss diabetes and how the disease affects the community primarily African Americans in Pine Bluff.

Guest host Jennifer Lipp asked Turely about a diabetes program for Black History Month and asked if the numbers are higher for people of color.

Lipp went on to ask Turley if the amount of processed and convenience store foods add to the risk of the disease.

Turley was also asked about examples of how people can take baby steps to adjust their diets.

Turley suggested that people eat a controlled amount of 45 grams of carbs per meal and went on to say this.

He also advised the community to monitor their eating habits by journaling daily to manage eating levels.

After being asked how one should get more information on how to start, Turley said to reach out to your doctor and ask for help with understanding how to manage diabetes or visit the American Diabetes Association’s website to get important information on how to start.
