Two paramedics from EASI (Emergency Ambulance Service Inc.,) were shot and the person who shot them was killed early Thursday morning.

Police identified the shooter as Kevin Curl, 22, who was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:35 a.m. by Deputy Coroner Eric Belcher. The body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The shooting occurred after the paramedics responded to a call in the 1400 block of West 23rd Ave. just after 4:30 a.m.

Interim Assistant Police Chief Kelvin Hadley explained what happened when the ambulance crew arrived.

Hadley said both paramedics were taken to Jefferson Regional Hospital with gunshot wounds and were going into surgery. Their conditions were not immediately available. Although the incident report identified the two paramedics, Deltaplex News is not releasing the names at this point.

The female, who said Curl was her boyfriend, had thrown her to the ground and hurt her knee, and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

According to the police incident report, the paramedics were working on the female in the back of the ambulance when Curl walked up in an aggressive manner. When he was told to get back, he pushed one of the paramedics who punched Curl. The report said Curl then pulled out a handgun and shot both paramedics. One of them shot back, killing Curl.

Police said the investigation is continuing.
