A police investigation into a reported shooting Aug. 28 resulted in the arrest of a suspect Thursday.

According to a probable cause affidavit from Detective Corey Wilfong, the shooting occurred at a residence in the 2000 block of East 7th Avenue and when an officer arrived, found a male victim lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the lower stomach.Quantae Spears, 23, was identified by the victim but when questioned, denied any knowledge of the incident, Deputy Prosecutor Jay Girard said during a court hearing Friday.

While the officer was aiding the victim, he received information that a second person had been shot in the right leg and had been taken to Jefferson Hospital in a private vehicle.

When the first victim was questioned, he said Spears and a second man had been involved in the shooting.

Wilfong reported that Spears waived his right to an attorney and initially denied knowing the second person but later said he did. He also initially denied knowing the victim but changed his story and said he did know the victim because he had been locked up with him.

Girard said court records showed that Spears has pending charges of aggravated robbery, being a felon in possession of a firearm and theft of property and had a prior conviction for which he was sentenced to prison.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $40,000 cash only bond for Spears after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge him with first-degree battery.

Spears, who said he would hire his own attorney, was told to have no contact with the victim until the case is settled.
