On Tuesday, the City of Stuttgart’s bond refinancing proposal to help fund street and drainage improvements was approved by voters.

According to officials at the Arkansas County Clerk’s Office, 474 votes were cast in the special election, which asked voters to approve the refinancing of the city’s bonds to fund street and drainage repairs. The bond refinancing is expected to generate $20 million over a period of time.

Issue 1 to refinance the bonds received 446 votes for and 27 against. Issue 2 to fund street improvements received 449 votes for and 25 against. Issue 3 to fund drainage improvements received 446 votes for and 27 against.

According to the Stuttgart Daily Leader, Mayor Norma Strabala said she is pleased with the voters’ decision to allow the city to refinance the bonds.

“Stuttgart has voted to take the first step in fixing our streets and drainage problems,” she said Tuesday night. “With this money, you’ll start seeing repairs to our damaged roads, and quite a bit of work on our drainage system.”

Strabala asked that residents be patient in the coming months as the city gets to work making sure the city’s roads become and remain as safe as possible.

According to courthouse officials, the voter turnout was low for the special election. Stuttgart has over 5,000 residents and only about 9% of their population submitted a vote for the proposal.
