Prosecutors have upgraded the charge against a Pine Bluff teenager involved in the shooting of another teenager at Watson Chapel Junior High School on Monday.

On Wednesday, Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth found probable cause to charge Thomas Quarles, 15, with first-degree battery stemming from the shooting of Daylon Burnett, also 15.

During a brief court hearing Friday, Chief Deputy Prosecutor Will Jones told Bridgforth prosecutors would be amending the charge.

Burnett, who was identified by his mother and by the school, died Wednesday night at a Little Rock hospital.

Two .380-caliber shell casings were found lying next to the victim and when Quarles was taken into custody, a black handgun was found in his pocket.

Quarles told the court Friday that his mother would be hiring an attorney for him.
