Sims’ Blast Gives Baseball Extra-Inning Win
HOUSTON – Larry Sims’ two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team to a 6-4 10-inning win Sunday at Texas Southern.
Sergio Esparza was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. With one out, Sims hit a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall for the game-winning hit for UAPB.
Sims went tied career highs with three hits and four RBI, and Justin Robinson and Braelin Hence each went 2-for-4 in the win. Peyton Burks got the win in relief, pitching 4 1/3 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief. Bryce Roesch pitched 5 2/3 innings, yielding seven hits and four runs, with four walks and four strikeouts.
The Lions never trailed, talking the lead in the first inning. Robinson led off the game with a single on the first pitch of the game, and later stole second. With one out, Ricardo Sanchez singled through the left side to give UAPB the lead. Esparza then doubled to left field, moving Sanchez to third. With two out, Sims singled through the left side, scoring Sanchez for a 2-0 lead.
Tied 2-2 after two innings, UAPB went back in front in the third. Ryan Mallison reached on a fielder’s choice with two out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sims’ single to left center scored Mallison for a 3-2 lead.
Tied 3-3 after five innings, UAPB answered in the sixth. Jarficur Parker singled to left center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Hence’ single through the left side scored Parker for a 4-3 lead. TSU tied the score in the home half of the sixth, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
