Jefferson County Sheriff Lafayette Woods Jr., on Thursday said water pressure issues at the adult detention center have improved and while not ideal, conditions are better than they were a few days ago.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Woods said there are not as many people who are currently locked up, compared to this time last year.

Woods has been a part of a task force consisting of city and county leaders who have been meeting with Liberty Utilities since the situation began. The company submitted a report to the State Public Service Commission Thursday and Woods talked about what he hoped the company will do now.

He said the sheriff’s office is partnering with Lowe’s on East Harding Avenue Friday and Saturday to provide bottled water at no cost between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and also talked about changes the department has had to make because of what was described as a “crazy two weeks.”
