Jefferson County Sheriff Lafayette Woods Jr., who has followed the case of former Minnesota Police Officer Derek Chauvin, who was charged with murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd since the incident started last May.

On Tuesday, Chauvin was convicted of all three charges against him by a Minneapolis jury and was taken out of the courtroom in handcuffs. Sentencing for Chauvin will be in eight weeks. Wednesday morning, Deltaplex News asked Woods for his take on the trial and verdict.

Woods said he tells deputies that when they are out enforcing the law to always remember that training and also remember that no matter what the person is charged with, they are human beings and deputies need to act accordingly.

A video showing the entire encounter between Chauvin and Floyd was used multiple times before and during the trial and Woods described it as “really compelling”.
