Jefferson County Sheriff Lafayette Woods, Jr. has written a letter to offer condolences following the death of Jean Smith, a former employee of the Jack Jones Detention Center.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jean Smith, a former employee of the Jack Jones Detention Center, who passed away on Wednesday.

Learning of the passing away of any employee, past or present, is always difficult.

Jean worked in the kitchen of the detention center. Not only did she feed the children, but she loved the children who she referred to as her “little darlings.”

She had been a valued Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office employee since 1997, until she permanently retired in 2017.

I offer my sincere condolences to the Smith family and friends during this difficult time. Jean was a remarkable woman and everyone at JCSO is better for having known her. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 18th at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Angels, 3801 Camden Road, Chapel Village 1, Suite 12, Pine Bluff, AR 71603 or Jefferson County Humane Society, PO Box 2233, Pine Bluff, AR 71613.

With sincere sympathy,

Lafayette Woods, Jr.
