With the surge in new cases of coronavirus because of the Delta variant, Jefferson County Sheriff Lafayette Woods Jr. described efforts to keep the virus out of the jail as a “balancing act.”

Woods appeared on the Oldies 101.3 morning show and said business owners had contacted him about locking up more offenders who had committed thefts with the idea being that those offenders should “suffer some kind of inconvenience. I get that.”

He went on to say that if he is contacted by another agency asking him to hold a particular individual, he would.

Woods said detainees are offered vaccinations and a clinic was recently held at the jail for that purpose. He also mentioned legislation signed into law by Governor Asa Hutchinson prohibiting the issuance of mask mandate, legislation Woods did not agree with.
