UPDATE: Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has signed Senate Bill 182 into law.
The law now mandates that counties adopt the previous year’s budget if they have not passed a new one by January 1. The Bill successfully passed through both legislative chambers within the past week.
The bill came forth after the complete failure of the Jefferson County Quorum Court to pass a budget for 2025.
The House approved the bill with a substantial majority of 92 votes in favor, alongside 5 non-voting and 3 present members. This follows its previous passage in the Senate with another majority vote.
Despite multiple meetings in Jefferson County, including the most recent one on Saturday, efforts to pass a new budget have been unsuccessful.
