Repair work has started on the levee at Lake Monticello, according to the Advance Monticellonian newspaper.

Mayor Paige Chase said work crews will be on both sides of the levee in order to get twice as much done in a shorter period of time

Crews began removing the top level of gravel and once that has been taken off, the crews will begin removing the dirt. Interim Public Works Superintendent Charlie Hammock told the newspaper that the gravel and dirt will be saved so it can be reused.

He said once crews begin removing the dirt, they will continue to lower the levee until they find a weak spot, and will check for leaks.

The Mayor said work around the lake is designed to make it more hospitable to wildlife, residents and visitors.

Currently, the Highway 35 access to the lake is locked and will remain locked until the work is completed. b
