QC committee recommends filing positions

Despite the opposition of Justice of the Peace Dr. Conley Byrd, a committee of the Jefferson County Quorum Court on Tuesday recommended that vacant positions in a number of count offices be filled.

Despite a hiring freeze and County Judge Gerald Robinson’s calling for the elimination of 15 positions to saves money, a majority of the Human Resources Committee gave their approval to multiple requests from elected officials, many of them from the Sheriff’s Office.

after the meeting Byrd was asked about his opposition.

Among the positions the committee voted to fill were a deputy tax collector, voter registration clerk, sheriff’s secretary/clerk, a cook at the adult detention center and the juvenile justice center, a part-time nurse for the jails, a clerk in the small claims division of Jefferson County District Court, a paraprofessional at the juvenile center, a public information officer for the sheriff’s office, and a maintenance worker for the jail.

Deltaplex News asked Judge Robinson about the committee’s recommendations and Byrd’s statement about “kicking the can down the road.”

The full quorum court will vote on all the recommendations when they meet Monday at 5:30 p.m.
