The Ouachita River Correctional Unit has revealed that an inmate was found hanging in his cell.

A news release said that on Tuesday, staff observed 39-year-old inmate Brandon Betts hanging in a locked single-man cell.

Staff performed first aid at the cell until Betts was pronounced dead at 3:27 a.m.

Betts was a white male serving a 12-year sentence out of Mississippi County for theft of property.

A representative of the Ouachita River correctional unit said the Arkansas State Police was notified and is conducting an investigation into the death.

The Department of Corrections will be conducting an internal investigation into the death.
