Pine Bluff City Council holds first meeting of the year; Swears in newly elected members

The Pine Bluff City Council held its first monthly meeting of the year Tuesday at the Convention Center where they swore in the newly elected Council Members along with the City Attorney and returning elected members.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Pine Bluff District Judges Jackie Harris and Earnest Brown who swore in LaTisha Brunson as Ward 1 council member, Lanette Fraizer as Ward 3 council member, Alderman Steven Mays as Ward 4 council member, Glen Brown Jr returning to represent Ward 2, and City Attorney Althea Hadden-Scott.

Deltaplex News was present at the meeting and asked Brunson about how she felt being newly sworn in and her goals for the council.

Fraizer was also asked the same question and answered this way.

During the meeting, chair positions for committees were assigned to each council member. Council member Mays is the chair of Ordinances and Resolutions and Ways and Means,  Glen Brown Jr. is the chair of Public Safety,  Bruce Lockett is chair of Development and Planning, LLoyd Holcomb Jr as Chair of Administration, Glen Brown Sr. is Chair of community development, Steven Shaner is Chair of Public Works, Brunson as Chair of Traffic and Aviation, and Fraizer is Chair of Public Health and Welfare.

Under ordinances and resolutions, the council approved an ordinance adopting the 2021 Arkansas Fire Prevention Code; Amending sections 10-51 of the code of ordinances of the city which was declared an emergency and read three times before passing. That code was revised to get the previous code up to state standards.

The second item on the agenda was pulled, it was a resolution reallocating ARPA Funds from the North University Drive sewer extension to the opportunity house for building renovation.

The last item on the agenda was read and approved, it was a resolution congratulating the members of the Pine Bluff Zebras and Pine Bluff Dollarway Cardinals football teams for a successful 2022 season, and commending the coaches and staff of each program.

After the meeting was adjourned, Mayor Shirley Washington shared a few announcements with the public.
