After graduating from UMass, King worked in the criminal justice and corporate law fields in Atlanta, Georgia before attending the William H. Bowen School of Law in Little Rock. While at Bowen, King’s classmates elected him Vice-President of the Student Bar Association and he chaired the Street Law program whose mission was to bridge the gap between police and inner-city high school youth. King clerked at the Arkansas Public Defender Commission and the Law Office of H. Chris Christy where he assisted the firm in securing large money settlements on behalf of injured railroad workers and their families.
