LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — An Arkansas panel overseeing charter schools has recommended the closure of a publicly funded charter school in Pine Bluff amid concerns over the school’s finances and academic performance.
The state’s Charter Authorizing Panel voted in support Wednesday of closing Southeast Preparatory High School, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. The state Board of Education will consider the recommendation next month.
The school had nearly two-thirds of students in need of support in reading, as well as significant financial issues, state officials said.
The school opened in August 2018 and has 107 students, the state said.
Also at Wednesday’s meeting, the panel voted to approve a five-year renewal for the Arkansas Virtual Academy, which is an online charter school, and to approve a three-year renewal for Capital City Lighthouse Academy in North Little Rock.
