The UAPB Golden Lions held their annual spring football game Friday night at Golden Lions Stadium in a full four quarter scrimmage with the offense defeating the defense 30-9.

The offense was able to drive the field several times to include a 62-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Mekhi Hagens to redshirt freshman Tyler Shaw on the final play of the game.

Golden Lions head coach Doc Gamble said that it is good to put up points, but his defense was in a base defense most of the night.

Despite playing a base defense the front four were able to create pressure, recording six sacks on the night.

Gamble was impressed with his quarterback play, with all four quarterbacks leading the offense to at least one score each.

Gable said that spring was used to help new players to get their routine down and to make improvements in key areas. One area he is happy with is the improvement at running back.

He was also impressed with the play of senior quarterback Skyler Perry, who protected the ball well while moving his team down the field. Perry finished the evening throwing the ball for three completions for 63 yards and a touchdown, while running the ball six times for 29 yards.

Perry said that he wasn’t happy with the results on the field last season, and said that his team is working to develop in several areas.

He said that one big thing the team is working on is their mentality of finishing on the field.

The Golden Lions offense showed some speed Friday night, and Perry said that has been a big focus on the team.

Other players that stood out include sophomore quarterback Jalen Macon, running backs Johnny Wilson, Kayvon Britton, and Thomas Mimes. Wide receivers Terrill McCray III, Matthew Moses, Tyler Shaw, Kenji Lewis, and Jermaine Guilliard showed good hands, speed, and route running abilities.

Defensively junior defensive lineman Corace Hudson gave the offense fits all night long.

On special teams, kicker Zack Piwniczka was perfect on PAT’s while hitting a 25-yard field goal on the opening possession of the game.
