How Do You Sum Up 92 Years?
Olif Derek Boren, age 92 of Waldo, AR, passed away at Magnolia Regional Hospital on August 3, 2024. He was born on April 24, 1932, in Jena, LA, to the late Arlie Boren and Alta Dillon.
He was known to most as “Mr. Derek” and was a devoted husband of 53 years to Cleo, who passed away in 2007, and a compassionate partner to Martha until his last breath. He was a father, grandfather, uncle, friend, co-worker, and so much more to all who knew him.
He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, and served until an Honorable Discharge was awarded to him for an exemplary position as Staff Sargeant.
He has been involved in many community services throughout the years. He served as a Justice of the Peace for Calhoun County and a Leadership figure of the local Rehabilitation Program, just to name a few.
When he wasn’t working in construction or at the gravel pit, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, dancing, and building his chicken mansions… Just an all-around Outdoorsman.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister, and his wife Cleo.
He is survived by his wife, Martha; Four daughters and their families: Marla Boren (Arthur Gilbert) of Maryland; Debbie Smith (Michael) of Chidester, and their children- Lukas Smith (Haley) and their son, Gideon of Fordyce, Morgan Owen (Erick) of Fordyce; Misty Poole (Randall) of Sherwood, and their children- Cloe and Cooper; Sharron Crump of Magnolia; One son: Duane H. Wilbur Jr. (Connie) of Camden.
In addition to his already full life, along came five more grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Derek will be missed by so many, but remembered and cherished forever.

A visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6 PM until 8 PM at Benton Funeral Home in Hampton. Funeral services will be 10 AM Thursday at First Baptist Church of Hampton. Burial will follow at Means Cemetery.
