Monticello Mayor Paige Chase, who has chosen not to seek reelection, had some harsh words for one of the candidates seeking to replace her.

According to the Advance Monticellonian newspaper, Chase said she had been made aware of calls made by one of the candidates to city employees that asked leading questions. She said some of the questions are about city business and are reasonable while others are not and offered a standing invitation to all the candidates for Mayor to come to meetings of the council and ask their questions in public so everyone can hear the answer.

The Mayor went on to say that she is happy and willing to answer questions about city business at any time. She said she responded directly to the candidate, who she did not identify, and was called “honey” and “sweetheart.”

“I have only been called these terms of endearment by family members and my husband,” she said. “These terms were used to insult, condescend and demean, not because the candidate cares for me personally.”

She went on to say she will help any candidate make Monticello an even better place to live, work and play. “Please pay attention to who you elect, You will be choosing a future for your children and grandchildren.”

In other business, Kristin Garrison was appointed City Clerk to replace Dr. Jess Hylton, who resigned her position and moved out of state. Garrison will fill the remainder of Hylton’s term, which expires Dec. 31.
