The first phase of the Monticello Lake Bike Trail is already funded through grants, according to one of the people involved in the project.

The Advance Monticellonian newspaper reported that Dr. Doug Osborne told the Monticello City Council that the trail has $40,000 in unmatched donated money and asked for permission to apply for a second grant to go toward the second phase of the project.

The newspaper reported that Phase Two will cost approximately $347,000with a 20-percent match. The city would be $29,000 short of the $69,000 needed to match the full amount.

Osborne received permission to apply for the grant which would add seven miles to the trail once it is completed.

The council was told that the sidewalk project which will construct a sidewalk on the east side of U.S. Highway 425 from U.S. Highway 278 to Old Warren Road and the second phase which would construct a sidewalk from the Library to Jordan Park is still in the planning stage and is awaiting grant money for the project.
