The McGehee Police Department has issued a warning to area residents about a rash of recent thefts of vehicle parts.

According to the McGehee Dermott Times, McGehee Police have received about 20 reports of thefts of catalytic converters but believe the total number could be closer to 50.

The newspaper reported that catalytic converters can be quickly and easily sold on the black market because they contain precious metals like platinum and rhodium. The National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that the pandemic has cut production of the metals in overseas mines which resulted in a significant increase in value.

Mechanics say if the catalytic converter is stolen, motorists will likely hear a loud sound when cranking their vehicles since catalytic converters are a part of the exhaust system used to reduce emissions.

The newspaper reported that McGehee Police will be conducting extra patrols at night, watching parked vehicles closely to help protect property. Residents are also asked to keep an eye on abandoned vehicles and notify police if they see anything suspicious.
