At its most recent meeting, the McGehee City Council approved a resolution which will pay McGehee Police officers a $5,000 stipend.

According to the McGehee-Dermott Times-News, the State Legislature earlier this year appropriated $10 million statewide for cities to distribute to officers.

The newspaper reported that McGehee has 10 full-times officers who will qualify for the stipend for a total of $53,825.

Also at the meeting, Mayor Jeff Owyoung reported that McGehee has $1/6 million in the general fund, a significant increase over the $600,000 that was in the fund at this time last year. That figure does not include just over $381,000 from Federal American Recovery Plan money the city received in July.

The Mayor promoted he Shop McGehee First initiative, saying that sales tax  revenue is the major source of income for the city.
