The Poyen School District in Grant County has imposed a mask mandate, according to the Sheridan Headlight newspaper.

The newspaper reported that during its Aug. 10 meeting the board would “strongly recommend” the wearing of masks but decided against making masks mandatory.

Poyen Superintendent Ronnie Kissire made an executive decision after two weeks of class and 10 percent of the student population being quarantined.

He told the newspaper that he was trying to reduce the number of students being quarantined, explaining that if two people are in a room and one of them tests positive for COVID-19, both would have to be quarantined if one of them were not wearing a mask. If both are wearing masks, only the person who tested positive would have to be quarantined, he said.

The mandate will be in place until the next meeting of the school board Sept. 14.
