Watson Chapel School District officials provided updates this week on the district’s new high school facility, student academic performance and plans for the upcoming school year.

During an interview with Greg Horne on the Oldies 1013 Morning Show following Monday night’s school board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Keith McGee said teachers and staff have begun moving into the district’s new high school building as preparations continue for the start of classes this fall. McGee said the project was completed close to budget, with only minor additional costs related to improvements added during construction.

The school board also approved a Supplemental Instruction Program, or SIP, designed to help student-athletes who fall below academic eligibility standards. The program will provide additional instructional support while encouraging students to improve their academic performance.

McGee also shared results from recent Atlas assessments for students in kindergarten through second grade. According to district data, the percentage of students on track in reading increased significantly from the previous year, while math scores also showed improvement.

District officials also approved student handbooks, insurance agreements and other annual items ahead of the 2026-27 school year. McGee said the district is continuing to fill a small number of remaining teaching vacancies and expects to be fully staffed before classes begin.

The Watson Chapel School Board is expected to consider updates to certified and classified salary schedules during its July meeting.
