As Jefferson County elected officials are working on their budgets for 2023, one of the most important budgets is the one for the sheriff’s office and the jails.

Sheriff Lafayette Woods Jr. recently appeared on the Oldies 1013 morning show and was asked how much money it takes to operate the jail.

Woods went on to say that housing state prisoners are a topic that sheriffs all over the state are currently dealing with because of the backlog of state prisoners being housed in county jails until prison bed space is available. He said the legislature is being encouraged to build an additional prison to relieve some of the backlogs and to take some of the strain off county jails.

He was then asked about the cost of operating the juvenile detention center.

Morning show host Greg Horne then asked the cost to operate the sheriff’s office and Woods responded this way.
