With no dissent, two committees of the Jefferson County Quorum Court voted Tuesday to add a position to the County Assessor’s Office.

With one member of the county’s legislative body absent, both the Human Resources and Finance Committee recommended that the full court approves the position when it meets Monday at 5:30 p.m.

After the meeting, County Assessor Yvonne Humphrey, who is retiring at the end of the year, explained the need for the position to Deltaplex News.

Also recommended for approval was a resolution reappointing Glenn Barnes Sr., to a five-year term on the Economic Development Corporation of Jefferson County. His current term is set to expire May 9 and will not expire May 31, 2027.

The Public Safety Committee recommended approval for legislation appropriating money received by the Office of Emergency Management that was received last year from FEMA but was not appropriated when it was received.

Office of Emergency Management Director Karen Blevins explained the appropriation.

The county received a total of $36,341.89 from FEMA and another $23,850 from the sale of old equipment. At Blevins’ request, some of that money will be used to purchase a replacement copier and for parts and repairs but the bulk of it will go toward the purchase of a reliable vehicle to be used to respond to disasters, hazardous material accidents and other emergencies.

In her memorandum to County Judge Gerald Robinson, Blevins said the current vehicle used by the office is seven years old and has started to experience frequent maintenances issues.
