A Jefferson County man is behind bars after leading Grant County law enforcement officers on a high speed chase after it was revealed the man had felony warrants out of Jefferson County.

The man, 39-year-old Gregory Blackwood, began the chase at approximately 10:10 p.m. when Sheridan Police Department officers attempted to apprehend him. He began traveling on Highway 270 East before going through city streets, eventually making it to Little Creek Cutoff.

A Grant County deputy attempted to stop the pursuit at Highway 270 and Grant County Road 83, but Blackwood drove around the deputies’ vehicle, going through the ditch before turning onto Highway 270. Blackwood was recorded going between 75-85 mph while on Highway 270, and reportedly was swerving all over the road, to include swerving into oncoming traffic numerous times.

A Grant County deputy attempted to pass Blackwood in order to get in front of him when Blackwood swerved towards the deputies’ vehicle, striking the vehicle. Blackwood also reportedly swerved at a Sheridan Police Department vehicle as well.

The chase made its way into Jefferson County before a Grant County Deputy attempted a PIT maneuver on the suspect vehicle in order to stop the chase.

The suspect vehicle made an abrupt right hand turn onto Bruce Trail and appeared to be disabled before accelerating and striking a Sheridan Police Department vehicle according to the report.

The suspect then fled the scene and the pursuit continued through multiple areas of Jefferson County and eventually into Cleveland County.

The pursuit ended on Highway 114 in Cleveland County when the suspect struck a Grant County deputy vehicle.

The suspect was then apprehended by Jefferson County K9 Sgt. Soder. K9 Soder then held the suspect as deputies arrested Blackwood.

Blackwood was then taken to Jefferson Regional Hospital for treatment after his encounter with K9 Soder, then was booked into the Grant County Jail.

Felony warrants for Jefferson County will be served on Blackwood at a later time due to COVID-19 protocol, according to the report.
