A Jefferson County man who formerly lived in Dumas has been charged with felony theft stemming from the reported theft of a boat in rural Desha County in January.

According to the McGehee Dermott Times-News, Toby Rochelle, 54, was arrested on July 6 when he went to report to his parole officer and the Desha County Sheriff’s Office was notified.

The newspaper reported that a 1994 Bass Tracker boat was reported missing from a farm shed near Backgate and security cameras recorded a dark colored Dodge Dakota pickup truck pull up, the suspect walked around the boat, then hooked it up to the truck and drove away.

The boat was discovered by Jefferson County authorities off a rural road Feb. 2, less than 5 miles from Rochelle’s home. A game camera in the area recorded Rochelle dumping the boat and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
