A Stuttgart man was found dead near U.S. Highway 79 in Arkansas County Saturday after he was apparently hit by a vehicle that had left the scene.

According to a preliminary report from the Arkansas State Police, Nelson Sims, 56, was pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner William Barrett after Stuttgart Police responded to a report of a body lying next to the roadway near North Leslie Street.

The report said evidence at the scene indicated that Sims was struck by an unknown vehicle at an unknown time.

It was raining and the roadway was wet at the time, the report said.
