The Grant County Solid Waste Department announced it will expand recycling efforts in the county.

According to the Sheridan Headlight newspaper, the county recently began accepting aluminum cans and glass, in addition to the paper and cardboard items they have always accepted,

The newspaper reported that the county was able to add three part-time employees because of a program from AARP which allows them to employ three people 65 and older as recycling clerks.

Melissa Harrison, who is in charge of recycling said she hopes the county will be able to get new equipment with grants that will allow them to handle the large amount of cardboard that is received.

In a related development, the City of Sheridan will pick up cardboard on Thursdays, instead of trash days.

Harrison said there is also a financial incentive as the county will get money back on the recycling of cans and scrap metal and will not have to pay to dump those items in the landfill.
