Golden Lions With Quick Turnaround, Back On Field For Saturday Practice
After a bit of a sluggish day one, second-year head coach Cedric Thomas was pleased with today’s effort as the August 31 season opener at TCU is now exactly four weeks away.
“We got better today,” Thomas said. “It’s almost scary (the level of improvement form Friday), because I’m grading them hard. I thought yesterday wasn’t where we needed to be, but I wouldn’t want it any other way as a first day. However, today you could really see the retention from the summer workouts. The mental conditioning as practice went on was good, in that we still had execution at a high level. The bar is being set, and we’re not going to lower it.”
Among the points of emphasis early in camp is on finishing – repetitions, drills, plays, and periods until complete. UAPB lost four games last season by a touchdown or less, including two overtime games and one in double overtime. Thomas is making the concept a high priority with the vision of it becoming second nature for his 2019 Golden Lions.
“It’s starts with the practice structure,” Thomas said. “From individual sessions to the team periods being last allows us to assimilate the second halves of games to see if we have the wherewithal to have the mental capacity to do our assignments and do them at a high level. Restructuring our practice schedule coming into to this camp to put the bulk of team periods last allows us from a coaching staff to better evaluate our mental mistakes and making our players aware of it when we are physically drained and mentally tired.”
The Golden Lions return to practice Monday at 2 p.m. at Simmons Bank Field. Season tickets are on sale now for the six-game home schedule. General admission tickets can be purchased online at uapblionsroar.com/tickets starting at only $60.
