Golden Lions Fall at Texas Southern

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff football team dropped their sixth consecutive contest of the season to Texas Southern University 59 – 17 in downtown Houston, Texas Saturday afternoon

Arkansas-Pine Bluff would begin the drive with consecutive successful rushes by Kavon Britten of 6 and 7 yards respectively. Skyler Perry would complete his next two passes, including a 27 yard grab by Keyvien Johnson that moved the Golden Lions inside the Tigers 10 yard line. Unable to cross the goal line, settled for a 21 yard field goal by Zack Piwnicka, capping an eight play 72 yard opening drive. The Golden Lions would hold Texas Southern to a three and out, forcing a fourth down punt on their first defensive appearance. The Golden Lions second offensive possession started well, with successful runs of 3 and 4 yards by Britten, and a 27 yard reception from Perry to Josh Wilkes. Daemon Dawkins would fumble on the sixth play of the drive, swinging the momentum in the Tigers favor.

Texas Southern Freshman Quarterback Andrew Body would then take over the ball game, throwing four first half touchdowns to give the Tigers a 28-3 lead heading into halftime. TSU opened second half scoring on a 30 yard field goal by Ric. Garcia. The Lions would answer on a 2 yard touchdown scamper by Britten and a 46 yard touchdown pass from Perry to Trey Harrell to pull within 21 points at the completion of the third quarter. The Tigers sealed the deal scoring 3 fourth quarter touchdowns.

Perry finished the day going an outstanding 25-for-37 for 311 yards a touchdown and an interception. Britten led in rushing with 12 carries for 52 yards and a score. Trey Harrell led in receiving, pulling in 8 catches for 126 yards and a touchdown. The Golden Lions were led defensively by Jalon Thigpen as he posted a nine tackle performance.

The Golden Lions will return home this weekend as they prepare to host the Grambling State Tigers Saturday, November 6th, at Simmons Bank field. It will be Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day with a 2p.m. kick off.
