Golden Lions Come Up Short In Loss To Tennessee State
MEMPHIS, Tennessee — The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff fell 41-28 to Tennessee State on the road Saturday night in the 35th Annual Southern Heritage Classic.
Mekhi Hagens led UAPB’s passing attack with 276 yards through the air, tossing three touchdowns without throwing an interception.
Oshawn Ross led all Golden Lions rushers with 51 yards and one touchdown in the contest. Johness Davis also added 27 yards on the ground, averaging 5.4 yards per carry.
JaVonnie Gibson reeled in five catches for 149 yards and one score. Aramoni Rhone got in on the action in the passing game as well, hauling in three balls for 51 yards.
showed out for the UAPB defense, totaling four tackles and one recovered fumble. Elijah Jenkins added four tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one recovered fumble and Jonathan Goings Jr. had one forced fumble.
The Golden Lions won the turnover battle in Saturday’s game, forcing two turnovers while coughing the ball up one time, with UAPB turning those takeaways into seven points.
Defensively, UAPB held up fairly well against the Tennessee State rushing attack, holding the Tigers to 196 yards on the ground.
How It Happened
UAPB took a 7-0 lead over Tennessee State after scoring the game’s first points on the opening drive of the game. Tennessee State then scored to take a 17-7 lead before the Golden Lions put a touchdown on the board to narrow the gap and make it a 17-14 game.
After Tennessee State scored to increase its lead to 38-14, UAPB scored again with 9:37 left in the third quarter to narrow the advantage and make it a 38-21 game. The Golden Lions then scored again, narrowing the gap to 38-28. UAPB didn’t score again in the game and Tennessee State added three more points to finish off the scoring.
