Golden Lions Come Up Short In Heartbreaking Loss To Tennessee St.
MEMPHIS, Tennessee — The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff fell 24-14 to Tennessee State Saturday night at the 34th Annual Southern Heritage Classic at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, TN.
Jalen Macon, Nashville, TN. native led UAPB’s passing attack with 206 yards through the air.
Johness Davis totaled 167 yards to lead the Golden Lions’ ground attack and added one touchdown in the game, picking up 7 yards per carry along the way. Davis also tacked on 46 receiving yards.
Macon’s most prolific target in the ballgame was Tristan Ballard, who caught four passes for 65 yards.
Rico Dozier led the defensive unit with 13 tackles, followed by Khiry Morrison who showed out for the Golden Lions defense, totaling six tackles and one recovered fumble. Marc Flemming added seven tackles, 3.0 TFL, two sacks, and one forced fumble and Anas Luqman had three tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one sack in the loss.
The Golden Lions won the turnover battle in Saturday’s game, forcing one turnover while avoiding any giveways, with UAPB turning that takeaway into seven points. The UAPB offense did a good job keeping drives alive, converting on 41.7 percent of third-down attempts.
Defensively, UAPB held up fairly well against the Tennessee State passing attack, holding the Tigers to 195 yards through the air.
How It Happened
After Tennessee State took a 17-0 lead, UAPB put points on the scoreboard with 13:44 remaining in the fourth quarter to narrow the margin to 17-7.The Golden Lions then got on the scoreboard again to narrow Tennessee State’s lead to 17-14. UAPB didn’t score again in the game and Tennessee State tacked on seven more points to finish off the scoring.
