Former Jefferson County Judge Jack Jones died Wednesday night at Jefferson Regional Hospital.

Jones served as County Judge from 1989 to 2006 when he was defeated in the Democratic primary by then Justice of the Peace and current Arkansas legislator Mike Holcomb.

Prior to being elected County Judge, Jones worked as a sheriff’s deputy and later for the road department.

The juvenile detention center and juvenile court are housed in a building named for Jones.

“I really liked Jack,” current Jefferson County Judge Gerald Robinson said Thursday. “He was known to be a stubborn man, but you couldn’t fault his stubbornness because he always had the county’s best interest at heart.”

Robinson said “Jones was a stickler about the county’s money and helped to build what at one time was one of the strongest reserve funds in the state.

“He loved doing what he did,” Robinson said. “He was always asking me if there was anything he could do to help me and help Jefferson County.”

Funeral arrangements for Jones will be announced later.
