Five UAPB Track & Field Student-Athletes Qualify For NCAA West First Round

PINE BLUFF, Ark.,-  The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men’s track and field team will send five student-athletes to compete in four events at the 2019 NCAA West Preliminary Round, hosted by Sacramento State University.  The three-day event begins on May 23 and concludes on May 25.

The top-48 individuals in each event and top-24 relays qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds with the top 12 finishers at next week’s meet advancing to the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship held June 5-8 in  Austin, TX.

Wade Gardner and Laurel Heath (800m), Rasheed McAlpin (400m hurdles), Travis Bibbs (Triple Jump), and the men’s 4×400 meter relay team qualified for the Golden Lions.  A combination McAlpin, Garner, Heath, and Malique Smith will make up the mile relay team next week.

Garner will compete in the men’s 800 meters first round after winning the competition at the SWAC Championship with a time of 1:49.55.  Garner ranks 32nd among his fellow competitors.  Heath will also compete in the 800 meters competition after qualifying with a time of 1:51.53, which ranks 43rd in the event.

McAlpin will be competing in the 400 meters hurdles as he qualified with a time of 51:45, which ranks 31st in the West.

Bibbs the SWAC 2019 Indoor and Outdoor triple jump champion, will represent UAPB in the field event.  He clinched the crown in the conference championship with a mark of 50 feet, 6 inches in the triple jump, which is UAPB’s highest-ranked athlete at 28th the West Preliminary.

The Golden Lions time of 3:07.67 in the 4×400 meter relay is the 14th best in the West Preliminary Round.

The action for the Golden Lions opens Thursday, May 23rd  with McAlpin in the first round of the men’s 400 meters hurdles at 3:00 p.m. CT. and Garner and Heath in the men’s 800 meters at 6:35 p.m. CT.  Top finisher in the first round advance to Friday’s May 24th quarterfinals at 4:45 p.m. CT in the 800 meters and 5:15 p.m. CT in the 400 meters hurdles.  The triple jump and the 4×400 meters relay is scheduled for the final day of the West Prelims when Bibbs competes at 4:30 p.m. CT and the 4×400 meter relay team competes at 7:45 p.m. CT.
