The filing period for independent non-partisan candidates for municipal office and for school board positions is underway at the Jefferson County Courthouse and thru 1 p.m. Thursday, nine people had submitted petitions seeking election.

Six of those are current members of the White Hall City Council who are seeking another term. They are Franklin Johnson, David Beck, Gregory Scott Ray, Kenneth B. Smith, Andrew Lunsford and Joel Foster.

Gerald E. Mayher and John Wayne Moring have filed petition seeking election as members of the Humphrey City Council and Kevin Moore is running for a position on the Watson Chapel School District Board of Directors.

Candidates seeking school board positions have until Monday to submit their petitions while the filing deadline for municipal candidates is Wednesday at noon.

People who previously sought office by running in the March political party primaries and were defeated may not seek the same office by running as an independent.
