Former State Representative and Jefferson County Judge Henry “Hank” Wilkins IV has been given more time before he reports to federal prison.

According to state media, Wilkins, 68, had been scheduled to start his sentence March 7 but Federal Judge Brian Miller extended the report date to May 1.

Wilkins had been sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison after pleading guilty to accepting money from a lobbyist in return for steering legislation to a company run by the lobbyist.

The delay was approved after an attorney for Wilkins told the court that Wilkins was being treated for kidney failure and degenerative spinal disease, and a recent colonoscopy showed multiple polyps.

In addition to the jail sentence, Wilkins was ordered to pay $123,000 restitution to the state.

He served in both the state house and senate and was sworn in as Jefferson County Judge in 2017 and resigned 14 months later after being indicted by a federal grand jury.
