40-yard-old Matthew Abram of Pine Bluff was killed by law enforcement Friday evening after authorities said he pointed a gun on officers before he was shot.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department has said that deputies attempted to take Abram into custody Thursday evening, but he was able to escape apprehension

Authorities say the events began when a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy attempted to detain Abrams and question him about recent criminal activity.

Abrams fled with another person in a car and was pursued by the deputy. Authorities said earlier that the vehicle became lodged on railroad trucks.

The second suspect fled the car, but was apprehended Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies.

Officials say Abram also fled on foot and appears to have been shot in an exchange of gunfire with another deputy.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office then requested assistance from the Arkansas Department of Corrections who used search dogs to locate Abram. Authorities say Abram raised his gun again after refusing orders to drop the gun, and was fatally shot by Arkansas Department of Corrections officers.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Arkansas State Police.
