Dave Grohl apparently has “many ideas” regarding possible changes to the cover of Nirvana‘s Nevermind.
The original artwork for the RIAA Diamond-certified grunge classic features a naked baby swimming toward a dollar bill hanging from a hook. While considered to be among the most famous and iconic album covers off all time, the person who was photographed, a now-grown Spencer Elden, filed a lawsuit against Nirvana this past August, alleging that the image constitutes child pornography.
When asked about the lawsuit in an interview with the U.K.’s The Sunday Times, Grohl remains vague while lamenting the frequency of various lawsuits that comes with being a famous musician — “At some point, unfortunately, it just becomes par for the course,” he says — but does seem open to the idea of a new Nevermind cover.
“I have many ideas of how we should alter that cover,” Grohl says. “But we’ll see what happens.”
As for what exactly those ideas are, Grohl teases, “We’ll let you know.”
“I’m sure we’ll come up with something good,” he adds.
Elden’s lawsuit names Grohl, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and even late frontman Kurt Cobain, as well as his widow and executor of his estate, Courtney Love. Nirvana as a whole has not yet publicly commented on the suit, though the band did announce a 30th anniversary reissue of Nevermind, featuring the original cover photograph of Elden as a baby unchanged.
Following the announcement of the reissue, Elden’s lawyers told Billboard that they are requesting that Nirvana at least censor Elden’s genitalia for future editions of Nevermind.
