The Pine Bluff City Council faced an agenda with 12 items on it Monday, with everything from closing alleys in various parts of the city to waiving competitive bidding so that the Code Enforcement Department could buy a vehicle from a local dealer who agreed to meet the state contract price.

Sandwiched in the middle of all that was a proposed ordinance creating the process to use speed humps as a way to reduce vehicles speeding on residential streets.

Councilmember Joni Alexander sponsored the proposed ordinance, which was read for the first time at the meeting, and was asked about it by Deltaplex News.

The proposed ordinance, which will be read twice more, once at each meeting in June, sets out criteria for areas to be considered for the placement of speed humps, the selection process, and funding.

Also Monday the council heard the initial report from the United Citizens of Pine Bluff who conducted a community survey on public safety and released the initial results.

Kymaya Seals, a spokesperson for the group said the survey results are just the first step in the process to find solutions to the problems of gun violence and crime. Deltaplex News asked her what’s next.

Representatives of the group will meet with members of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee on May 25 to go over the survey results in more detail, and to discuss goals.
