A committee of the Pine Bluff City Council is looking at a variety of solutions to help clean up the town.

At a meeting of the Public Health and Welfare Committee Thursday committee members Steven Shaner and Lloyd Holcomb Jr., were joined by Council members Ivan Whitfield and Joni Alexander in discussing ways to help citizens dispose of trash.

Those ideas ranged from locating two dumpsters in each ward to creating one central location which would be available on a regular basis.

Shaner, who I chairman of the committee said one of the biggest issues in locating dumpsters in each ward would be ensuring that the dumpsters would be behind locked gates when not in use to prevent contractors and others from dumping materials at night, or materials that created health hazards. There would also be an additional cost involved from Waste Management for the dumpsters.

Alexander suggested using Hestand Stadium as a central location with multiple dumpsters and a six-month trial, then additional dumpsters could be placed in each of the city’s four wards. A location at Hestand’s Stadium would require someone there to monitor the dumping.

Whitfield said he had spoken to the Street Department about that and Alexander also suggested Clean and Beautiful.

Committee members will be seeking more information on the idea before presenting a plan to the full council.
