The Star City Council on Monday approved an ordinance dealing with keeping livestock in the city limits. The ordinance, which carried an emergency clause, became effective immediately and among other things, sets out space requirements of a minimum of 10 acres for keeping cattle, horses, or donkeys.

Hogs or pigs, goats, and sheep are prohibited, as are fowl with the exception of chickens.

Animals currently in the city limits that have previously been reported to the city will be allowed a temporary exemption of not more than one pig, one goat, six fowl and will comply with the same minimum land requirements as set out for chickens.

The ordinance does not apply to commercial business operations existing in properly zoned locations or to animals kept by the Star City School District.

Violations of the ordinance could result in a fine of $50 per unpermitted animal or $25 per day animals are maintained so as to create unhealthy and/or unsanitary conditions.
