Volunteer firefighters in Cleveland County will receive life insurance coverage beginning next year, according to the Cleveland County Herald.

The newspaper reported that Cleveland County Judge Jimmy Cummings’ told a meeting of the Quorum Court that he learned about the life insurance, and about firefighters being eligible for workman’s compensation through a meeting sponsored by the Arkansas Association of Counties.

The Quorum Court approved legislation buying the workman’s compensation for all county volunteer firefighters, which Cummings said totals about 105. This does not include firefighters from the City of Rison, which has a tax to take care of its volunteer firefighters.

A total of $2,500 was set aside to pay for the coverage and Cummings said he would get a complete count before making the payment.

That total will be used for the entire year rather than month to month as volunteer fire department rosters tend to change,
