City hosts renaming ceremony in dedication of Carl A. Redus Jr.

The city of Pine Bluff hosted a renaming ceremony to rename the Aquatics Center in honor of the former mayor Carl A. Redus Jr. The ceremony took place Friday, July 29th at the Aquatics Center facility. Present was Mayor Shirley Washington and her office, the family of then-Mayor Redus, Sheriff Lafayette Woods Jr., County Judge Gerald Robinson, members of the city council, and more.

The Aquatics center director Larissa Fore, opened the ceremony with a welcoming piece and she gave a few words about the purpose of the ceremony.

Washington gave the purpose of the ceremony and explained the history that led to the development of an aquatic facility in Pine Bluff.

The agenda featured Ted Davis who is the assistant to Redus during his term as Mayor. Davis spoke about the accomplishments of their office during that time, which invoked the initiation of the Penny for Progress Initiative that enacted the three-eight cents sales tax for the county and five-eight cent sales tax for the city of Pine Bluff to pay for several projects that included the development of an aquatic facility.

Other featured guests on the ceremonies agenda include two members of the aquatic center Joyce Brown and Christian Murray who explained their experience in the center and gave inspiring words to the community to also join the featured activities at the center.

Redus who was present at the event also gave special remarks about the honor.
