City council meets to discuss several ordinances and resolutions

The city of Pine Bluff City Council held its second monthly meeting on Monday to discuss several ordinances updating city codes to the state standard. All of the council members were present at the meeting except Steven Shaner.

During committee reports, the chair of public safety Glen Brown Jr. updated the members about the fire department who stated that there were 26 fewer fires this month compared to the last, and the department has hired nine firefighters with three vacancies left.

On the topic of proposed ordinances, the amendment of chapter 28 of a code respecting sewer service and connection and administrative fees was approved with one contest from alderman Steve Mays.

Another resolution featured was the authorization of a grant agreement with Best Friends Animal Society to promote the humane care and preservation of animals in the custody of the animal control department was also approved. Mayor Shirley Washington spoke to the council about why she thought this agreement was essential.

Also, discussed was a resolution that would allow the Mayor to enter into a professional service agreement with Maxie Kizer to recapture the city’s expense concerning remediation of public nuisances within the urban renewal area. The council agreed to table the resolution so that they can obtain more detail on how long the process will be and the expectations of the agreement.

On another subject, Washington also gave a few announcements about community events coming up later this month.

To close out the meeting, in light of the retirement of Chief of Police Lloyd Franklin Sr., Mayor Washington awarded Franklin with a plaque of appreciation for his year with the department.
